Every moment of downtime can be a chance to learn - to push beyond your normal modes of doing. I'm also always looking for opportunities to make my practice more sustainable, efficient, and deliver better results quicker for my clients. Lately I've been applying both of those principles together by developing my own tools that help streamline my work and recapture time that can be better spend making.
There are few things as gratifying as having a research client fly through the grant application stages, earning that recognition for it’s transformative potential. Always happy to come back in and expand upon a paper’s ability to express that in more detail, and for new audiences.
Reading while doing grounds that knowledge in your own context, and of course helps reencode it through live application. It’s a gift to have the excuse to read McCabe again, and to be reminded in her voice that the human element of design business is always the beating heart, as I wrangle site margins into shape.
I love working in Illustrator, finessing every line until it’s doing the job just right – but there’s nothing that beats the low stakes and immediacy of paper to get thoughts down early. My internal editor may not like letting the lines fall where they may, but I’ll let him loose when he’s needed.
