Climate Vulnerability Feature Story Map Series

A 14-panel ArcGIS Storymap on a one week turnaround demonstrating the relative vulnerability of rural and urban environments to the effects of climate change. A linear sequence of paired tableaus will demonstrate these across a number of community and environmental measures, particularly heat and coastal erosion, and the comparative easement methods and vulnerabilities in each environment.

Initial ideation between the client and producer yielded a simple layout and environmental factors to represent over the course of the linear story, which we then developed into rough art to lock the depictions of those elements while respecting the Bureau’s departmental standards and styleguides and showcasing a representative diversity of population. Sequential feedback rounds allowed the visual style to evolve and receive polish concurrent with composition adjustments making for a efficient use of the one week allotted to complete the project and satisfy the various levels of stakeholder engagement within the Bureau and their partners. Clean modern shapes and high contrast usage of the full palette available meant all requisite accessibility standards were met and enabled enhanced subject readability in each scene with limited glyph or label usage so that the materials would better translate across multiple language contexts.
